Hilal Elver, S.J.D. is a professor of law and the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food since June 2014. She is a Research Professor, at the UC Santa Barbara, and global distin-guished fellow at the UCLA Law School Resnicks Food Law and Policy Center. She started her teaching career at the University of Ankara Faculty of Law, then she was appointed UNEP Chair on Environmental Diplomacy at the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies in Malta. Since then she has been teaching various Universities in Europe and the United States. Besides her teaching career, she has done extensive work with governmental and international organiza-tions, as well as human rights and environmental NGOs. Her publications have focused mainly on international environmental law, international human rights law, particularly women’s rights and right to food. Among her publications Peaceful Uses of International Rivers: Euphrates and Tigris River Basins published in (2002); The Headscarf Controversy, Secularism and Freedom of Religion pub-lished in 2012 by the Oxford University Press, and her most recent Co-edited book with Paul Wapner, Reimagining Climate Change was published in 2016.

Interdisciplinary seminar examining theoretical and empirical research on gender and the transformation of social and economic structures. Students will develop a comparative perspective on issues of women and public policy by contrasting and comparing such policies in North and South America, Eastern and Western Europe, Asia, and Africa.

WGGP offers a graduate minor in Gender Relations in International Development (GRID). The GRID interdisciplinary minor is designed to give students the analytical and empirical skills needed to address global human security and gender equity issues in research and policy analysis, as well as daily life. In this age of global economic transformation, it is especially necessary for researchers and practitioners to examine who gains and who loses from new policies, to assess the disparities in the impacts of reforms on women, men, and children, and to study the successful strategies and policies that appear.
