We ♥ Our Students - 3D Printing Impact

Dr. Olivia Coiado, Teaching Assistant Professor and one of the College's Medical Education Facilitators, worked with the Illinois MakerLab in the College of Business to 3D print hearts for the prospective medical students attending the College's Showcases. Many students said the experience of seeing the heart fabricated and being able to take home a heart, highlighted how medicine blends with technology cementing the goals of the college. Media In the Classroom - Recording Microlectures

The Urbana Campus offers CaptureSpace, a free tool connected to Illinois Media Space, which allows you to record your own microlectures for students. Microlectures, which are short videos, provide a great way to teach a skill, share information, or illustrate a concept. Our Video Creation guide will walk you through the process from installing the software to recording your video to uploading and publishing. If you are uncomfortable with recording your own microlecture, the College has partnered with the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning to help.

Lunch and Learn - Upcoming Sessions and Resources

As a reminder, our second Lunch and Learn on November 16th from 12:00 P.M. - 1:00 P.M. will feature Dr. Bob Crantston speaking on professionalism, ethics, and humanities.  This is an online meeting and will be recorded. We have created a box.com space to house recorded session and presentation materials.

Learn, See, Practice, Prove, Do, Maintain: An Evidence-Based Pedagogical Framework for Procedural Skill Training in Medicine

Procedures are fundamental to the medical profession. Acquiring competency in procedural skills is a fundamental goal of medical education, requiring specific education, training, and assessment. Once competency is acquired, maintenance of skills is essential to avoid natural skill decay. The well-known Halstedian mantra “see one, do one, teach one” is the traditional paradigm for teaching procedural skills in medicine. Read how these authors created a six-step pedagogical framework for procedural skills training: Learn, See, Practice, Prove, Do, and Maintain.

Description and Early Outcomes of a Comprehensive Curriculum Redesign at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine

In 2012, the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine launched a redesigned curriculum addressing the four primary recommendations in the 2010 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching report on reforming medical education. This new curriculum provides a more standardized evaluation of students’ competency achievement through a robust portfolio review process coupled with standard evaluations of medical knowledge and clinical skills.
