Doing Her Part to Ease Students' Stress
Students with overstressed lives may be interested to know that junior Hannah Kim is conducting research as an intern with the Students Pushing Innovation program to determine the most effective ways to decrease stress during pressurized moments. She hopes to connect this work to the field of elementary education by discovering an effective device for students to use before taking tests or during times when they are filled with anxiety over schoolwork. Hannah hails from Seoul, South Korea, and is involved with other campus organizations that are varied in terms of what they do—which is fine by her. "I love how our university provides its students with a range of opportunities to choose from," she said. Her favorite instructor in the College of Education is Sheila Dean, who is teaching students about the fundamentals of becoming a distinguished teacher in her Introduction to Teaching Elementary Age Children course this semester. "She lets her students have a voice in the classroom," Hannah said.

This Dean's Diversity Lecture presentation by Dr. Z Nicolazzo of Northern Illinois University will focus on how the politicization of the transgender community is splitting the liberal/progressive base and is built on misogyny, racism, and sexism. Dr. Nicolazzo will further discuss how this political strategy impacts transgender people in K-12 and in higher education. Learn more...

Backpack Full of Cash Screening at College of Education

Attend the screening of the film Backpack Full of Cash, narrated by actor Matt Damon, to discover the real cost of privatizing America's public schools. The movie will be followed by a panel discussion with College of Education faculty members William Trent, Rochelle Gutiérrez, Chris Higgins, and Donald Owen, the superintendent of the Urbana school district. Lisa Monda-Amaya will moderate the talk.

Growing Up Trans Screening at College of Education

The group Rainbow Bookbag will host a screening of the PBS documentary Growing Up Trans, with time after the showing for questions and comments from participants. All preservice school professionals are encouraged to attend, and pizza and drinks will be provided. Learn more...

Help Make a Difference in Puerto Rico via Study Abroad Class
The ACES/Engineering Global Service Learning Disaster Relief Projects: Hurricane Maria course offers a faculty-led study abroad tour to Puerto Rico that is designed to develop a pathway toward sustainable responses for disaster relief efforts. Students in the class will investigate cultural, political, and social factors that preceded recent events in Puerto Rico and will work toward solutions. The travel period during the course will take place during spring break. Info sessions about the class will take place at the below times and locations, and free pizza will be provided. Submit Project Proposals for Future Learning Center
Application Deadline: Dec. 1
The College of Education O'Leary Learning Center is seeking up to 10 interdisciplinary projects from students who are interested in using the collaborative space starting in the spring of 2018. The projects will showcase the interdisciplinary and collaborative research that will take place within the center. Selected project proposals will receive $1,000 of funding support. Learn more...

The Office of Undergraduate Research is seeking motivated and experienced undergraduate researchers to participate in the new Illinois Undergraduate Research Ambassadors program. Selected ambassadors will promote undergraduate research on the Illinois campus and help the office develop and maintain student-focused programs that represent the diverse array of disciplines on campus. Support Toys for Tots Drive this Holiday Season
Donation Deadline: Dec. 15
Toys for Tots donation boxes will be located throughout the Education building until the middle of December. Bring in quality toys for children and place them in the boxes located in Office 110, in the north and south lobbies, and next to the north and south elevator doors on all floors of the building. Serve as Campus Leader by Becoming Social Justice Peer Educator
Application Deadline: Dec. 21
Applications are being accepted for students who are interested in becoming a workshop facilitator for the Social Justice Educator Paraprofessional Program. This program provides students with the opportunity to broaden their understanding of diversity and social justice issues, create and maintain a welcoming and safe campus environment, and develop interpersonal communication skills.
