| | Lean on me, when you’re not strong, I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on…
You just call on me, brother, when your need a hand. We all need somebody to lean on.
Like Bill Withers’ song says, at some point in our lives, we all need somebody to lean on. Volunteering is one way you can be that person to lean on for someone else.
Volunteering not only helps others, but can also be a great way to get experience and be involved in your community. Employers look for well-rounded individuals who will not only do their job well, but will represent the company well outside of the workplace. They support and encourage volunteerism as part of their corporate responsibility playform. Adding volunteer activities to your resume can impress recruiters because it highlights your character, initiative, and community spirit.
New networks can also be formed through your volunteer experiences. You never know who you will meet, so it's a great ways to broaden the scope of people who know of your skills. These people can be valuable contacts and references when you are on the job market. |

| | Bridget Regan with IlliniThon miracle child, Eliza | | |
Bridget Regan, a senior studying Human Development and Family Studies, has had many volunteer experiences that have shaped her college career and future goals.
Since her freshman year, Regan has been involved in IlliniThon, a student group that raises money for Children’s Miracle Network. Their year of fundraising culminates in a 12 hour dance marathon each spring. This year, Regan is serving as the Executive Director of Hospital Relations. She establishes a cause connection between the money raised and St. John’s Children’s Hospital in Springfield by working with representatives to enhance the care and hospital experience of St. John’s patients while providing IlliniThon members with an impactful view of why they are raising money.
“That is the most incredible thing to me,” said Regan. “IlliniThon for me has always been the one piece [of my college experience] that fits exactly where it’s supposed to.”
Last summer, Regan participated in the HDFS Study Abroad Experience in South Africa where she worked as a play volunteer with the kids at Red Cross Hospital Association. She was responsible for taking toys, games, and books up to the wards for the children. Even with a language barrier, Regan was able to build relationships with the children and learned which toys they preferred.
“It made me really happy to walk down the hallway and see little faces smile up at me, because they knew I was there to play with them,” said Regan.
She is now applying for graduate school in Occupational Therapy because her volunteer experiences have showed her that this will be the perfect career path.
“As dorky as it may sound, my volunteering has constantly reassured me of my purpose,” said Regan. “It reminds me that everything I am doing now is so that I can be impactful in someone else’s life.” |
