Books Galore: The 17th Annual Book Sale and Galley Giveaway
The 17th annual CCB Book Sale is coming up! If you haven’t attended the sale before, get ready for thousands of brand-new books for young people of all ages and interests at a greatly reduced price. Reserve a spot in our exclusive Sunday pre-sale for early access and the best selection. We will accept reservations for the pre-sale starting Monday, January 29th through Monday, February12th. Tickets to the pre-sale are $20. The free-admission book sale will take place in the CCB (iSchool Room 24) from February 19th through February 21st, during which time the CCB’s normal operations will be closed. Keep your eye on the 17th Annual Book Sale webpage, as well as our calendar to stay in the loop with book sale happenings. As always, feel free to contact us at ccb@illinois.edu for more information.
The spring semester Galley Giveaway is also upon us! Join us in the CCB for free pre-publication copies of books for readers ages 0-18. On Thursday, January 25th 12pm-6pm, iSchool students, staff, and faculty are welcome to join us for our iSchool Preview Day. Friday, January 26th 11am-3pm, the Galley Giveaway will be open to the general public. Please contact the CCB at ccb@illinois.edu with any questions.

Our Affiliates Out and About
Associate Professor Kate McDowell will be doing a Storytelling Your Career workshop for iSchool students on February 9th, and a Teach Talk on February 23rd as part of iSchool Welcome Weekend. She will also be doing a Storytelling Your Career workshop for the Graduate College, which will be open to all graduate students across campus on March 2nd.
Assistant Professor Elizabeth Massa Hoiem is one of the six University of Illinois faculty members to be awarded the National Endowment for Humanities Fellowships for 2018. Hoiem received the fellowship for her book project “The Education of Things: Mechanical Literacy in British Culture, 1752-1860.

Every month, the CCB and BCCB Graduate Assistants highlight books reviewed in the most recent issue of the Bulletin that we were excited to read. These decisions are based on personal preference, but all books listed are Recommended by the Bulletin. High up in the tree rests a nut, a delicious nut. Mouse shakes the tree to get the nut down, but instead of the delicious nut down falls a very hungry Fox. Mouse is chased up the tree by the hungry Fox. Which of course makes Fox try to shake Mouse from the tree, instead a very hungry Boar falls down. Fox is chased up the tree by the hungry Boar. Boar is now after their tasty snack and shakes the tree to get Fox to come tumbling down. Instead, a very hungry Bear falls from the tree. Bear chases boar up the tree, and now he shakes shakes shakes the tree, and then the nut, Mouse, Fox, and Boar all come tumbling down. Instead of gobbling up the gluttonous animals Bear devours the delicious nut. The punchline will have young readers chuckling. This book is perfect for story time, with clever page design, repetitive simple language, and bright minimalistic artwork.

There are seven children in the Problim family, one for each day of the week. Each is equipped with a unique skill, and together they are a force to be reckoned with, albeit a very friendly and well-meaning force. The Problims reside happily in the Swampy Woods until their home unexpectedly explodes. With their archaeologist parents away completing work for the Queen of Andorra and limited options available they have no choice but to seek rightful ownership of their Grandpa Problim’s mansion. (No one has seen him since his mysterious disappearance while away on a daring adventure.) But to do so, they must first prove they are his relatives, and their terrible soon-to-be neighbor, Desdemona O’Pinion, has her own plans, both for the house and for the children. In a race against the clock, the Problims work to uncover the secrets of their family history and Lost Cove before the Society for the Protection of Unwanted Children sends them away. This charming story is a mix of The Addams Family, Coraline, and A Series of Unfortunate Events; full of adventure, magic, heart, and mystery, with a reminder that being different isn’t a problem but something to be celebrated. It’s like their mother taught them, “When you meet someone new, think first about all the good and the sad and wonder and worry that’s probably blooming in their heart. Just like yours.” Everyone has a unique story, and readers will be eager to get their hands on the next book in the series to continue the story of the Problim Children.
