Legislative experts from Illinois Association of County Board Members and National Association of Counties (NACo) will discuss recent and potential future changes in legislation at the state levels and federal levels that will have a direct impact on Illinois local governments this coming year. Allium 'Millenium' has been awarded the 2018 perennial plant of the year, according to University of Illinois Horticulture Educator Kelly Allsup. “I heard about this plant at a pollinator conference in October from Steve Foltz, Director of Horticulture at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, calling it a must have plant for the pollinator garden. The zoo has placed it on their Zoo's Best Perennials for Pollinators list, where they promote plants throughout the zoo so that homeowners know what to plant in their own yards. The program involves teen volunteers known as the Buzz Troop who use cameras to track pollinators to different flowering plants.”

Filmmaker Harun Mehmedinovic captured a rare event at Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park, called a cloud inversion. On extremely rare days, cold air trapped in the canyon and topped by a layer of warm air, in combination with moisture and condensation, form the phenomenon referred to as the full cloud inversion. In what resembles something between ocean waves and fast clouds, Grand Canyon is completely obscured by fog, making the visitors feel as if they are walking on clouds. The full inversions, which mostly take place in the late fall or early winter, are sometimes followed by huge snowstorms, as depicted here. This video was filmed as part of SKYGLOW, an ongoing crowdfunded quest to explore the effects and dangers of urban light pollution in contrast with some of the most incredible dark sky areas in North America.
