Each spring, GGIS presents the Jerome Fellmann and John Thompson Awards to graduating seniors, to recognize their outstanding academic achievements and contributions to the department. We are proud to announce the Spring 2018 award recipients, who will be invited to the LAS Awards Ceremony on April 29th, and recognized at SESE Convocation on Saturday, May 12th.

Pronoy Rai (advisor: Prof. Trevor Birkenholtz) has accepted a tenure-track assistant professor position in International and Global Studies at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon, beginning Fall 2018. Pronoy’s dissertation research on the social geographies of seasonal labor migration in rural western India has received support from the Social Science Research Council and University of Illinois (Women and Gender in Global Perspectives program, Graduate College, and GGIS.)
Rebecca Shakespeare (advisor: Prof. Mei-Po Kwan) has been awarded an NSF Dissertation Research Award for her project "Housing Costs and the Residential Mobility of Middle-Income Renters." This project will focus on the impacts of increased housing costs on middle-income renters and how their perceptions of housing cost change and their experiences of neighborhood change impact their decisions to move or not move..[Read more]
Jue Wang (advisor: Prof. Mei-Po Kwan) received a 2018 Student Research Fellowship from the AAG Applied Geography Specialty Group for his research project entitled "Utilizing context-based crystal-growth activity space for spatial-temporal assessment of individual environmental exposure based on GPS tracking, GIS, and geo-tagged tweets." |

The Cline Center for Advanced Social Research is pleased to invite AY2018-19 applications for the David F. Linowes Faculty Fellows Program, which is made possible by a generous gift from the Linowes family. This program recognizes exceptionally promising faculty members doing innovative work aligned with the mission of the Cline Center. All tenure-stream faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are eligible.
Fellows receive a discretionary research budget of $5,000, plus additional in-kind support from the Cline Center as needed, potentially including dedicated staff time and computational resources. Appointments will be for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second, depending upon the project, and successful completion of an end-of-year performance evaluation.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss their project ideas with the Center’s director before developing a final proposal. A faculty committee will evaluate the proposals. When evaluating proposed continuing projects, the committee will assess past performance and progress. Awards will be announced by May 1, 2018 and must be approved at the college and campus levels. Proposals must be emailed to the Cline Center’s business manager, Sheila Roberts (sarobert@illinois.edu), before 5:00pm on April 1, 2018. Completed proposals must include:
- A brief letter that discusses how the project fits within your longer-term research interests and goals
- A short proposal (no more than two pages) describing the research project
- A copy of your curriculum vitae.
