About University Leadership

These administrative units drive the university’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation and impact. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is a public research university, ultimately responsible to the citizens of Illinois and the Illinois General Assembly.

Authority over the university is held by a board of trustees. A president is the chief executive officer for the university system, and each of three member universities is headed by a chancellor, vice chancellors, who have university-wide responsibilities, and other administrators, whose duties are delegated by the chancellor.

The chancellor is the chief executive officer of the university. The Office of the Chancellor has the all-encompassing goal of ensuring the overall excellence of U. of I. Vice chancellors, associate chancellors and directors report directly to the chancellor.

Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

The provost is the chief academic and budget officer for the university. The office oversees academic and budgetary policy and priorities, ensures the quality of the faculty and student body and maintains educational excellence. All deans and directors of academic units report to the provost.

Vice Chancellor for Administration and Operations

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration and Operations drives critical operations that support university safety, infrastructure and efficiency at Illinois. This role oversees a wide range of units, including Public Safety, Facilities & Services and Willard Airport.

Office of the Campus Senate

The Senate is the legislative body of the university. It is composed of 200 faculty and 50 students and sets educational policies, such as admission and graduation requirements, the academic calendar and more.

Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is responsible for leading strategic efforts to enhance the university’s diversity, inclusivity and belonging efforts across all aspects of its mission. The office is also responsible for administrative processes and practices that support the university’s commitment to create a university community that is welcoming, accessible and equitable for all.

Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement leads the integration and coordination of the university’s outreach for development and alumni relations. This strategic approach strengthens constituent relationships and generates significant private financial support for the university.

Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation leads the university’s research strategy, supports scholarship and oversees interdisciplinary research institutes. It also manages research administration, compliance and policies to ensure safe, ethical and innovative research.

Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs provides Illinois students with a well-rounded college experience through a comprehensive range of programs. It supports students’ personal and professional growth, with a special emphasis on leadership and career development, health and wellness, belonging programs and community engagement.
